Whether you want to learn a new skill, move from one department to another, or progress into more senior roles, RCH support and encourage our teams to continue their learning and development. We ask you what your goals are and we then help you put a plan together to help you achieve them. We encourage our teams to remain curious and to have a hunger to learn – from each other, from external professionals and from those in our care.
For our new starters with no prior experience of care, we support them to complete their Care Certificate within their first three months of joining RCH. This includes you completing 15 standards which are covered in 11 modules on an online platform with each module signed off by your mentor. The Care Certificate give our teams the foundations of good quality, person-centred care. We also support any new starters who have worked in care beforehand and would like to complete this qualification, but have not yet had the opportunity to do so.

The training provided at RCH is split into mandatory training and additional training. All of our teams will complete mandatory training as part of their induction, and this will then be refreshed regularly over time. A wide variety of additional training dependent on your role and your goals is also provided, e.g., Dementia Training, revalidation support for Registered Nurses, gaining a higher level in your NVQ etc.

RCH is proud of how many of our managers, heads of department and team leaders have progressed from junior roles to senior roles over the years, including some who had never worked in care before joining RCH. Presently, 5 of our 11 managers are individuals who have worked their way up into their current management roles from other RCH roles, but development can also include realising that a different department is where your true passion lies and we have many examples of how we’ve supported this, e.g., a Head Chef who used to work in the Care Team, a Senior Care Assistant who used to work in the Lifestyles Team to name just a few.

“Within the acute services it is often thought that nurses in nursing homes do not maintain their clinical skills, in fact in some areas mine have developed further.”
Wendy, Registered Nurse
“I’ve not stopped learning. We can develop and train more leaders or HOD, but we also learn how to take responsibility, build self-confidence, being an example to others, especially to our new team members.”
Team member, Withens
“For my first job in care, it has opened my eyes to lots of opportunities in it”
Holly, Care Assistant
“This is a second home for most of us, especially as some of them started their career here and have now developed to become senior members of the team”
Rubina, Home Manager
